What Is Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)?

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a long-lasting condition where the kidneys slowly lose their ability to do important jobs. Normally, kidneys filter waste, extra fluids, and toxins from the blood. They also help control blood pressure, keep minerals balanced, and support red blood cell production. When the kidneys do not work as well over time, these tasks are affected, and waste and fluid can build up in the body.

Unlike Acute Kidney Injury (AKI), which happens quickly, CKD develops slowly over months or years. Many people do not notice symptoms at first because the disease often starts without warning. Finding CKD early and managing it well can help slow down its progress and protect the kidneys.

Factors That May Contribute to Kidney Damage

Certain health problems and medical factors can raise the risk of long-term kidney damage, such as:

  • Long-standing diabetes
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Kidney stones and urinary tract obstruction
  • Autoimmune disorders affecting the kidneys
  • Inherited kidney conditions
  • Chronic glomerular diseases
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Previous episodes of kidney injury
